Time-Saving Tips for the Sandwich Generation

Let’s be real: being in the Sandwich Generation can feel like you’re stuck in the middle of a never-ending group text. Your kids need something. Your parents need something. Work needs something. And your own needs? They’re somewhere on a Post-it you lost three weeks ago.

There’s love in what we do. There’s purpose. But there’s also a lot of pressure. If you’re constantly toggling between soccer practice and doctor appointments, managing medications and homework, and trying to keep a house running on top of it all—you’re not alone.

This season of life is heavy, but it’s not impossible. Let’s talk about some time saving tips and building your support system.

Managing your time & your expectations

1. Time Block Without Micromanaging Your Day

You already know that long to-do lists are basically wishful thinking. Instead, try time blocking in broad strokes. This isn’t about packing your day minute by minute—it’s about giving yourself permission to focus on one kind of task at a time. Rather than responding to everything as it comes in, block time for uninterrupted focus on one task at a time.

Things will shift, of course. But having a loose rhythm reduces that constant “what am I forgetting?” feeling.

2. One Calendar, One Brain

If you’re juggling multiple lives, put everything in one calendar. Doctor appointments, carpool pick-up, deadlines, your own stuff—it all goes in one place. Whether it’s a color-coded Google calendar or a big paper planner stuck to the fridge, the goal is to see your whole life in one snapshot.

This also makes it easier to hand things off. When someone says, “How can I help?” you’ll know exactly what to delegate at a glance.

3. Add Buffers, Not Just Tasks

We tend to fill every inch of the day. But if you’re always running from one thing to the next, there’s no time to recover—or pivot when things go sideways.

Try this: build 20-minute buffers between major parts of your day. Not for doing more. For doing nothing—or dealing with the thing you didn’t expect. These gaps will save you from mental overload and give you breathing room, literally.

You’re Not a One-Person Show: Build Your Support Team

Here’s the truth: you need help. Not just emotional support, but practical, in-the-weeds help. The kind that shows up, picks up, drops off, or just listens without needing a full explanation.

A few ideas:

  • Be specific when asking for help. “Can you sit with Dad Thursday at 3?” works better than “Let me know if you’re free.”

  • Assign roles if you have siblings or adult kids. One handles errands, one handles scheduling, one handles bills.

  • Don’t overlook non-family support—friends, neighbors, school parents, church members, even coworkers.

  • Consider professional backup—like a cleaning service or meal delivery. It’s not indulgent—it’s strategic.

You don’t have to carry all of this by yourself. And you shouldn’t.

"You may not be able to hand off everything, but you can start making space for your own needs again. It's not selfish-it's survival."

"The fact that caregivers are on call 24/7 is a reality that needs to be acknowledged and supported. Businesses must provide additional support and/or flexibility for caregivers. The medical system must start including the caregivers in the patient care plan. It’s time for us to redefine the word community and provide the support that caregivers so desperately need and deserve."
